Eco-Label for Clothes

Eco-Label for Clothes

Ecolabeling, or ecolabelling, is a voluntary method of environmental performance labeling and certification that is applied worldwide. With these labels, it has been proven that these products are environmentally preferable within certain categories.

The eco-label label, unlike many green symbols and claims on the market, are reliable labels approved by an independent and impartial organization that are based on life cycle and meet transparent environmental criteria.

An eco-label label on protective clothing and personal protective equipment means that this garment is approved according to a science-based standard. Although the requirements and product categories differ, all standards address multiple environmental and health problems, including toxicity, air quality, energy and water use, recyclability, use of natural resources, and so on.

Many eco-label programs implemented today are based on the ISO 14024 standard and gain status according to this standard. This standard has been published by TSE with the following title: EN ISO 14024 Environmental labels and declarations - Type 1: Environmental labeling - Principles and methods.

The standard includes principles and procedures for the development of environmental labeling programs and assessment of conformity, including the selection of product categories, product environmental criteria and product function characteristics. It also explains the certification procedures for awarding the label.

In the application of this standard, the general principles for environmental labels and declarations described in EN ISO 14020 are valid.

When developing eco-label criteria, for example, when setting ecological standards for clothing, the focus is on the stages where the product has the highest environmental impact. Therefore, it differs from product to product. For example, if we look at textile products, there are strong environmental impacts in the dyeing, printing and bleaching processes of fabrics. For this reason, textile criteria have been designed in order to reduce the damage during production as much as possible.

Product specific criteria ensure that any product bearing an eco label is of high performance and quality. Eco-label criteria are developed and revised transparently.
