EN ISO 20471 High Visibility Warning Clothing - Test Methods and Properties

The EN ISO 20471 standard, published by the International Standards Institute (ISO), describes the requirements for high-visibility garments that visually determine the user's presence. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: EN ISO 20471 Clothing with high visibility warning - Test methods and properties.

When viewed by persons using vehicles or other mechanized equipment, under daylight conditions and under headlight illumination in the darkneeds attention. This standard includes requirements for the minimum spaces and placement of materials in protective clothing, as well as for color and retroreflection in such garments.

More information on risk situations for high visibility can be found in the standard appendix. This international standard does not apply to medium-risk and low-risk situations.

In the EN ISO 20471 standard, the performance of the conspicuity-enhancing materials used in high-risk visibility garments are determined photometrically with minimum areas and design requirements. Clarity is essentially the ability of an object to easily attract visual attention. This is particularly important in complex environments with many objects. Clarity is determined by the luminance contrast, color contrast, pattern and design of an object and its movement properties according to the background of the environment in which it appears.

The use of reflective signs in one's main joints to facilitate the biological movement perception greatly increases pedestrian visibility, especially at night. A large number of occupational deaths occur each year due to pedestrians being hit by motor vehicles entering the work area. High-visibility personal protective equipment is considered to increase visibility at night.

In short, the EN ISO 20471 standard contains requirements for risk assessment of the conditions in which high-visibility garments will be used. In the meantime, the selection and use of highly visible clothing is subject to each country's own legal regulations.
