EN 143 Protective Respirators - Dust Filters - Properties, Tests and Marking

EN 143 Protective Respirators - Dust Filters - Properties, Tests and Marking

In the European standard EN 143, the requirements for particle filters used as components in unaided respiratory protection devices are explained and test methods are presented. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: EN 143 Protective respiratory devices - Dust filters - Properties, experiments and marking.

EN 143 Protective Respirators - Dust Filters - Properties, Tests and Marking

The test methods in this standard are laboratory test methods used to evaluate the compliance of filters with the requirements of the standard and for use with other protective respiratory devices. However, filtering facepieces and filters used for escape devices are not covered by this standard.

In the EN 143 standard, particle filters are divided into three groups depending on their filtering efficiency:

  • P1: Low filtration, designed for use against solid particles only
  • P2: Medium filtration is subdivided according to the capacity of the filters to separate both solid and liquid particles or solid particles only
  • P3: High filtration subdivided according to the capacity of the filters to separate both solid and liquid particles or solid particles only

Procedures for testing and validating air cleaner and particulate respirators in European Union countries are subject to EN 143 and a number of relevant standards. All relevant standards refer to the EN 143 standard for certification. Requirements for the certification process and quality control testing are included in the personal protective equipment manuals and apply to all personal protection equipment. All respirator filters fall into category II or III.

The relevant standards apply to various classes of respiratory equipment. For example,

  • EN 149 standard for filtering face masks (disposable masks)
  • EN 405 or EN 140 standard for reusable half masks, EN 141, EN 143, EN 371 and EN 372 standards for filters
  • EN 136 standard for reusable full face masks
  • EN 137 and for SCBA self contained breathing apparatus EN 145 standards
