The requirements for half and quarter masks designed for use as part of respiratory protection equipment are described in the EN 140 standard, which is a European standard, and test methods are presented. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: EN 140 Respiratory protective devices - Half masks and quarter masks - Features, experiments, marking.
The requirements set for these masks are: testing for inward leakage, breathability, flammability, and mechanical tightness of valves and fittings. Half and quarter masks are used in negative pressure isolation rooms and electric or supplied air systems. If these masks are to be used in a negative pressure isolation room, filters in accordance with EN 141, EN 143, EN 371 or EN 372 standards must be attached to these masks.
However, half and quarter masks used for diving and diving apparatus are not covered by this standard.
Half and quarter masks conforming to the EN 140 standard are masks that cover the nose, mouth and chin or only the nose and mouth, and are usually made of flexible rubber or silicone. Since heavy filters are uncomfortable and compromise the strength and protective capacity of the gaskets, the weight of the filters to be attached to the half masks is 300 grams at most. The thread connection of half masks must be worn in accordance with the EN 148-1 standard.
In short, the EN 140 standard includes technical specifications for both half and quarter masks. Half masks are masks that cover the nose, mouth and chin. The quarter mask is defined as covering only the nose and mouth.
