EN 13034 Protective Clothing Against Liquid Chemical Substances

EN 13034 Protective Clothing Against Liquid Chemical Substances

The EN 13034 standard, which is a European standard, describes the requirements for protection against liquid chemicals and sensitivity to splashes from liquid chemicals. Employees are required to wear protective clothing that meets the EN 13034 standard in businesses that may come into contact with liquid chemicals. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: EN 13034 + A1 Protective clothing against liquid chemicals - Performance rules for protective clothing providing limited protection against liquid chemicals (type 6 and type pb6 equipment).

EN 13034 Protective Clothing Against Liquid Chemical Substances

This standard describes the minimum criteria for limited use and limited re-use performance of chemical protective clothing. Protective clothing with limited performance against chemicals is intended for use in situations where a full liquid permeability barrier is not required, subjected to light sprays, liquid aerosols or low pressure and low volume splashes.

In the EN 13034 standard, the requirements for properties related to wear, resistance, absorption and liquid acid penetration and repellency are controlled. Under this standard, protective clothing items are tested for splash protection from four liquid chemicals: sulfuric acid (dissolved in water at 30 percent concentration), caustic soda (dissolved in water at 20 percent concentration), o-xylene, and butanol. These chemicals listed are quite common chemicals that are used frequently in practice. Generally, workwear conforming to EN 13034 standard provides adequate protection against all acids and alkalis (bases) dissolved in water. In these tests, the temperature of the chemicals is 2 degrees with a margin of 20 degrees and the following two properties are determined:

  • The amount of chemical liquid sprayed by the fabric
  • Percentage of liquid left by the fabric in one minute

Feature of the EN 13034 standard, chemical test it is that only one of the four liquid chemicals should be passed. However, the test is generally expected to pass these chemicals for sulfuric acid and caustic soda. Therefore, businesses are advised to identify which specific chemicals employees come into contact with. Additional tests should be performed if necessary.

With the experience gained over many years, our organization also provides testing services for EN 13034 protective clothing against liquid chemical substances, within the framework of laboratory services of the materials with a trained and expert staff.
