EN 469 Protective Clothing for Firefighters - Performance Requirements for Protective Clothing for Fire Fighting Activities

Developed by the British Standards Institute (BSI), the BS EN 469 standard includes minimum performance requirements for protective clothing designed to be worn during firefighting activities. The requirements detailed in this standard include design, heat and flame, mechanical, chemical, comfort and visibility. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: EN 469 Protective clothing for firefighters - Performance rules for protective clothing used in fire fighting.

EN 469 Protective Clothing for Firefighters - Performance Requirements for Protective Clothing for Fire Fighting Activities

The mentioned standard covers general clothing design, the lowest performance levels of the material used, the test methods to be used to determine these performance levels, and the label and explanatory information provided by the manufacturer.

Basically the BS EN 469 standard divides firefighting activities into two performance levels based on a risk assessment:

  • Level 1 specifies the minimum requirements for firefighting clothing used in outdoor firefighting and support activities, taking into account the expected operational environments and conditions of firefighting activities.
  • Level 2 specifies the minimum requirements for firefighting clothing for the risks encountered in fire fighting and structures, fire rescue activities.

The distinction between these two levels is limited by the heat and flame requirements. It also provides additional protection against water ingress and resistance to water vapor. These performance levels must be described in the garment label and instructions for use.

BS EN 469 standard offers twenty test methods and requires high performances. In general, the standard focuses on four core values: flame, radiation, waterproof and breathability.

This standard includes protective clothing required for wildfighting, fire-fighting clothing in high radiant heat where reflective clothing is required, and does not cover hazardous chemicals or advanced technical rescue operations clothing.

With the experience gained over many years, our organization also provides performance testing services for BS EN 469 protective clothing for firefighters and protective clothing for firefighting activities, within the framework of laboratory services of the materials with a trained and expert staff, to the demanding enterprises.
