ASTM F2407-20 Standard Specification for Surgical Gowns for Health Care Use

ASTM F2407-20 Standard Specification for Surgical Gowns for Health Care Use

The ASTM F2407-20 standard, developed by the American Testing and Materials Association (ASTM), describes the requirements for the performance, documentation and labeling of medical gowns used in healthcare facilities. Four level barrier properties for these gowns are included in the ANSI / AAMI PB70 standard. The ANSI / AAMI PB70 standard evaluates the barrier properties of medical gowns using only Level 1, 2 and 3 water. When these gowns are exposed to blood and other fluids of different surface tensions, the performance of additional tests, Level 4 gown requires barrier levels against simulated biological fluids. The full name of this standard is as follows: ASTM F2407-20 Standard specification for surgical gowns for use in healthcare facilities.

Barrier testing should be performed to determine the impact penetration, hydrostatic resistance, and viral penetration resistance performance of critical areas of the medical gown. In addition, the physical properties of the critical areas of the medical gown should be tested and comply with the following requirements: tensile strength, tear resistance, seam strength, lint formation, evaporation resistance and water vapor transmission rate. General safety requirements should be established according to biocompatibility, sterility assurance, flame spread and natural rubber latex specifications.

Brief ASTM F2407-20 specificationIt meets the minimum requirements for medical gowns used for the protection of healthcare workers in situations where there is potential for exposure to blood, blood, body fluids and other potentially infectious materials. This specification requires barrier testing based on the gown classification system established to the ANSI / AAMI PB70 standard.

This standard includes protective clothing used in non-medical applications such as isolation gowns or decontamination gowns, protective clothing for hands such as medical gloves, patient examination gloves or other medical gloves, goggles or face shields, surgical caps or caps for the head, such as surgical masks or respirators. It does not refer to protective clothing, foot protective clothing such as operating room shoes, shoe covers or surgical boots, or other types of protective clothing and equipment worn by healthcare professionals.
