ASTM D737-96 Standard Test Method for Air Permeability of Textile Fabrics

ASTM D737-96 Standard Test Method for Air Permeability of Textile Fabrics

In the ASTM D737-96 standard, developed by the American Test and Materials Association (ASTM), a test method involving the measurement of the air permeability of textile fabrics is presented. The full name of this standard is as follows: ASTM D737-96 Standard test method for air permeability of textile fabrics.

ASTM D737-96 Standard Test Method for Air Permeability of Textile Fabrics

This test method applies to a large number of fabric types, including woven fabrics, nonwovens, air cushion fabrics, blankets, pile fabrics, knitted fabrics, layered fabrics, and velvet fabrics. The fabrics can be untreated, sized, coated, resin treated, or otherwise treated.

During the tests, the air flow velocity passing vertically through a known fabric area is adjusted to obtain a predetermined air pressure difference between the two fabric surfaces. The air permeability of the fabric is determined by measuring this air flow rate.

This test method is widely used in the acceptance test trade, as the interlaboratory precision estimates are at acceptable levels. If there is a dispute arising from differences in the reported test results, the buyer and supplier companies, laboratories Comparative tests should be made to understand whether there is a statistical bias between them.

Average results from the two laboratories should be compared using both appropriate statistical analysis and an acceptable probability level previously selected by the two parties.

Air permeability is an important factor in the performance of textile materials such as fabrics for airbags, clothing, mosquito nets, parachutes, sails, awnings and gas filters. For example, filtering efficiency is directly related to air permeability. Breathability is also used to provide an indication of the breathability of weatherproof and rainproof fabrics or coated fabrics in general.

This standard does not claim to address all safety concerns, if any, for its use. It is the direct responsibility of the user applying this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

With the experience gained over many years, our organization also provides standard testing services for the air permeability of ASTM D737-96 Textile Fabrics, within the framework of laboratory services of the materials with a trained and expert staff.
