In the ASTM D5034-09 standard, developed by the American Test and Materials Association (ASTM), grip and modified grip test methods are presented to determine the tensile strength and elongation of many textile fabrics. The full name of this standard is as follows: ASTM D5034-09 Standard test method (grab test) for tensile strength and elongation of textile fabrics.
The grab test method is applied to woven, non-woven and felt fabrics, and the modified grip test procedure is primarily used for woven fabrics. This test method is not recommended for glass fabrics or knitted fabrics and other textile fabrics with a high stretch of over 11 percent.
In order to determine the tensile strength and elongation of textile fabrics using the strip test method, a test in accordance with the ASTM D5035 standard should be performed.
The grab test in the test method described in the ASTM D5034-09 standard for determination of breaking force and elongation is considered satisfactory for acceptance testing of commercial shipments of most woven or non-woven textile fabrics. The modified grip test procedure is considered satisfactory for the acceptance test of woven textile fabrics commercial shipment.
This test method is not recommended for knitted fabrics as it has high stretch. In addition, technical regulations may be required for any fabric with a strength greater than 200-N / cm wide. All test methods in this standard apply to the testing of conditioned or wet fabrics.
