ASTM D1424-09 Standard Test Method for Tear Strength of Fabrics with the Falling Pendulum (Elmendorf Type) Apparatus

ASTM D1424-09 Standard Test Method for Tear Strength of Fabrics with the Falling Pendulum (Elmendorf Type) Apparatus

Developed by the American Association of Testing and Materials (ASTM), ASTM D1424-09 provides a test method for determining the force required to propagate a single tear, starting from a cut in a fabric and using a falling pendulum apparatus (Elmendorf type). The full name of this standard is as follows: ASTM D1424-09 Standard test method for the tear strength of fabrics with the falling pendulum (Elmendorf type) apparatus.

ASTM D1424-09 Standard Test Method for Tear Strength of Fabrics with the Falling Pendulum (Elmendorf Type) Apparatus

This test method is applicable to a large number of fabric types, including woven, layered blankets, pile pile, blanket and airbag fabrics provided that they do not tear in the direction of force application during the test. The fabrics may be untreated, substantially sized, coated, resin treated, or otherwise treated. Tests can be applied with or without wetting the sample.

The ASTM D1424-09 test method is suitable for warp direction tests of warp knitted fabrics only. It is not suitable for the running direction of warp knitted fabrics or for both directions of many other knitted fabrics.

This test method for determining tear strength with a falling pendulum-type apparatus is used for acceptance testing of commercial shipments of fabrics. However, comparative tests may be required depending on the situation.

If there is a dispute arising from differences in the reported test results, the buyer and supplier companies, laboratories Comparative tests should be made to understand whether there is a statistical bias between them. At this point, statistical assistance is required to investigate prejudice. Average results from the two laboratories should be compared using both appropriate statistical analysis and an acceptable probability level previously selected by the two parties.

The ASTM D1424-09 standard does not claim to address all safety concerns, if any, for its use. It is the direct responsibility of the user applying this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

With the experience gained over many years, our organization also provides standard testing services for the tear strength of fabrics with the ASTM D1424-09 falling pendulum (Elmendorf type) apparatus, within the framework of laboratory services of the materials with a trained and expert staff.
