EN 14683 Medical Face Masks - Requirements and Test Methods

The EN 14683 standard describes the design, production and performance requirements and provides test methods for medical face masks designed to limit the transmission of infectious substances from employees to patients during medical procedures or in medical environments with similar requirements. In our country, this standard has been published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: EN 14683 + AC Medical face masks - Requirements and test methods.

EN 14683 Medical Face Masks - Requirements and Test Methods

This standard describes the design, construction, performance requirements, and testing methods of medical face masks aimed at limiting the transmission of infectious agents from personnel to patients in surgical procedures and environments with similar requirements. A medical face mask with a suitable microbial barrier is also effective in reducing the emission of infective agents from the nose and mouth of an asymptomatic carrier or a patient with clinical symptoms.

This European standard does not only apply to masks for the personal protection of healthcare workers.

A surgical mask is a medical equipment that covers the mouth and nose and provides a barrier to minimize the direct passage of infectious agents between surgical personnel and the patient. The main use of surgical masks is to protect the patient from infectious agents spread by healthcare professionals. In certain cases, it also protects the user against contamination from a patient or another person around them. Everyone should use it to reduce the risk of spreading infection, especially in epidemic or pandemic situations.

Surgical masks are divided into two groups depending on their bacterial filtration efficiency and breathability. The bacterial filtration efficiency measures the effectiveness of the surgical mask to capture aerosol droplets emitted by healthcare professionals or people wearing the mask. Masks with lower bacterial filtration efficiency are recommended to be used only by patients in epidemic or pandemic situations to reduce the risk of spreading infection. Other masks with increased filtration efficiency are designed for use by healthcare professionals in an operating room or other medical environment with similar requirements.

With the experience gained over many years, our organization also provides EN 14683 Medical face masks testing services to the demanding enterprises within the framework of laboratory services of materials with a trained and expert staff.
