ASTM F2299 / F2299M-03 Standard Test Method for Determining Initial Effectiveness of Materials Used in Medical Face Masks to Penetration of Particles Using Latex Spheres

ASTM F2299 / F2299M-03 Standard Test Method for Determining Initial Effectiveness of Materials Used in Medical Face Masks to Penetration of Particles Using Latex Spheres

In the ASTM F2299 standard developed by the American Test and Materials Association (ASTM), a test method is presented to measure the first particle filtering efficiency of materials used in medical face masks using monodisperse aerosols. This test method uses luminous particle counts in the size range of 0.1-5.0 μm and air flow test velocities of 0.5-25 cm / s. In these tests, the number of particles in the feed stream (upstream) is compared with that in filtering (downstream) and the filtering efficiency is determined. Aerosols vary according to their distribution. The monodispersed aerosol (monodisperse aerosol) produced in the laboratory contains particles of the same size. The full name of this standard is as follows: ASTM F2299 / F2299M-03 Standard test method for determining the initial effectiveness of materials used in medical face masks to the penetration of particles using latex spheres.

In the test method presented in the ASTM F2299 standard, the initial filtration efficiency of materials used in medical face masks is measured by sampling representative volumes of upstream and downstream latex aerosol concentrations in a controlled airflow chamber. It offers special test techniques to evaluate materials when both manufacturers and users are exposed to aerosol particles of 0,1-5,0 μm sizes.

This standard does not provide a comprehensive characterization of medical face mask material for a particular protective application.. It also does not evaluate the overall effectiveness of medical face masks in preventing the inward infiltration of harmful particles. Overall, protective clothing design is an important factor to be considered in addition to particulate penetration.

Tests performed in advanced laboratories in accordance with the ASTM F2299 standard are also carried out in accordance with ASTM F2100, ASTM F2101, ASTM F1862 and EN 14683 standards. These tests include bacterial filtration efficiency, differential pressure, particle filtration efficiency and flammability. These tests are necessary to support the marketing claims of the performance of face masks and to classify these mask types.

With the experience gained over many years, our organization also provides standard testing services to the demanding enterprises, within the framework of laboratory services of the materials with a trained and expert staff, to determine the first effectiveness of the materials used in ASTM F2299 / F2299M-03 medical face masks on the penetration of particles by using latex spheres.
