EN 171 Personal Eye Protection - Infrared Filters - Permeability Properties and Recommended Use

EN 171 Personal Eye Protection - Infrared Filters - Permeability Properties and Recommended Use

In the EN 171 standard, which is a European standard, scale numbers and permeability requirements for filters used for protection against infrared radiation are explained and test methods are presented. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS 8435 EN 171 Personal eye protection - Infrared filters - Permeability properties and recommended use.

EN 171 Personal Eye Protection - Infrared Filters - Permeability Properties and Recommended Use

Other applicable requirements for filters covered by this European standard and for frames and assemblies for which they are intended to be fitted are contained in another European standard, EN 166 (EN 166 Personal eye protection - Features). Guidelines for the selection and use of such filters are included in the standard annex.

Protective filters defined in the EN 171 standard are not suitable for direct or indirect observation of an electric arc. For this, a source filter suitable for the observed source should be used.

Numbering table of filters is given in EN 166 standard. The scale number of infrared filters was determined between 4-1,2 and 4-10, and for each scale number, the light transmittance and maximum average spectral transmittance value in infraredshown.

The permeability requirements in the EN 171 standard are given in the following details:

  • General requirements
  • Eyepieces with advanced color recognition (optional)
  • Eyepieces with improved reflectance in infrared (optional)

The definitions of permeability requirements are given in EN ISO 4007 standard (EN ISO 4007 Personal protective equipment - Eye and face protection - Glossary) (former EN 165 standard).

Determination of light transmittance is explained in EN 167 standard (EN 167 Personal eye protection - Optical test methods).

Briefly, the EN 171 standard describes the scale numbers and permeability requirements for filters for protection against infrared radiation.

Our organization, which has been trying to support businesses from every sector with its wide range of testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies for years, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, within the scope of glove testing services, the permeability of infrared filters within the scope of EN 171 personal eye protection. It also provides testing services.
