ISO 22196 Measurement of Antibacterial Activity on Plastics and Other Non-Porous Surfaces

ISO 22196 Measurement of Antibacterial Activity on Plastics and Other Non-Porous Surfaces

The ISO 22196 standard, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), provides a test method for evaluating the antibacterial activity of antibacterial treated plastics and other non-porous surfaces (including intermediates) of products. This test method is not intended to be used to evaluate the effects and spread of bacteria on non-porous surfaces without antibacterial treatments. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: ISO 22196 Measurement of antibacterial activity on plastics and other non-porous surfaces.

Meanwhile, the ISO 846 standard describes a test method for evaluating the effects and spread of bacteria on non-porous surfaces, different from those covered in the ISO 22196 standard.

Secondary effects of antibacterial treatments, such as prevention of biological degradation and odor, are not covered by the standard. This standard is not intended to be used as a test method to document or claim the biodegradability of plastic materials, for example.

Textile products treated with antibacterial, even if their surfaces are coated or laminated, are not covered by this standard. Such products are covered by the ISO 20743 standard (EN ISO 20743 Textile - Determination of antibacterial activity in antibacterial finished fabrics).

In addition, photocatalytic materials are not covered by this standard. Such products and materials are covered by ISO 27447 (ISO 27447 Fine ceramics, advanced ceramics, advanced technical ceramics - Test method for antibacterial activity of semiconductor photocatalytic materials).

The use of potentially dangerous microorganisms requires a high degree of technical competence and is subject to legal regulations. This test method should only be applied by individuals trained in microbiological techniques. In addition, disinfection, sterilization and personal hygiene practices must be strictly followed.

Antibacterial products formed with an antibacterial agent (biocide) suppress bacterial growth on the surfaces of the products when conditions exist under which growth can occur. It keeps the surfaces clean and healthy and also minimizes the impact on the environment by reducing the diffusion of the agent.

With the experience gained over many years, our organization also provides test services for the measurement of antibacterial activity on ISO 22196 Plastics and other non-porous surfaces within the framework of laboratory services of materials with a trained and expert staff.
