Standard Test Method for Determining the Residual Killing Activity of ASTM E3058-16 Hand Antiseptic Formulations

Standard Test Method for Determining the Residual Killing Activity of ASTM E3058-16 Hand Antiseptic Formulations

In the ASTM E3058-16 standard developed by the American Testing and Materials Association (ASTM), a test method for determining the killing activity of skin antiseptics against transient microbial skin flora on hands is presented. This standard is used to evaluate products that are used and rinsed with water, and products that are used without water and do not require rinsing. When applying this test method, it is absolutely necessary to comply with the legal regulations for the protection of human subjects.does.

Standard Test Method for Determining the Residual Killing Activity of ASTM E3058-16 Hand Antiseptic Formulations

The test method presented in the ASTM E3058-16 standard should be applied by persons trained in microbiology at biosafety level 2 in facilities designed and equipped to work with potentially infectious agents.

Many commercially available hand sanitizers make claims for long-term protection or prolonged killing (e.g. 1882 hours) based mainly on the test method in the ASTM E2752 standard or the test method in the ASTM E6 standard, or the test results described in both.

Currently, there are no standard test methods for evaluating the ability of a hand antiseptic formulation to kill microorganisms on hands when a dry contamination event occurs some time after product use. The test method in the ASTM E3058-16 standard is a method to verify killing claims for hand antiseptics.

In advanced laboratories, hand sanitizer tests are carried out to help manufacturers verify the purity of their products and their manufacturing procedures. This class of (topical) antiseptics used on the skin are alcohol-based products that, when applied correctly, are capable of destroying more than 99 percent of infectious bacteria and viruses. Healthcare professionals must disinfect their hands before undertaking various tasks that expose both themselves and patients to infection. Industry standards and legal regulations require a certain level of purity to maintain the effectiveness of the product. For this reason, manufacturers benefit from testing services to detect, measure and define contaminants in hand disinfectant.

With the experience gained over many years, our organization also provides standard testing services to determine the residual killing activity of ASTM E3058-16 hand antiseptic formulations within the framework of laboratory services of the materials with a trained and expert staff.
