Developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the ASTM E2011-13 standard provides a test method for evaluating the ability of hand washing or hand rub agents to reduce or eliminate live viruses on the skin of human hands. This test method should be applied by people trained in virological techniques.
This test method is designed to evaluate the virus-elimination activity of hygienic hand washing and hand rub agents from contaminated hands for testing purposes. This test method includes all hand exposure and reflects actual conditions of use such as rubbing during hand decontamination. In addition, alternative product forms such as alcohol or non-alcohol based liquids, gels and foams are tested according to label instructions.

During testing, applying viruses to the entire surface of both hands poses a greater risk for subjects than using only their fingertips. Therefore, more care must be taken to ensure that the subjects' hands are free from any visible damage. Apart from this, virus preparations must be thoroughly screened for foreign or unexpected pathogens or documented for free before being used in such tests.
