ASTM E1174-13 Standard Test Method for Evaluating the Effectiveness of Healthcare Professional Handwash Formulations

ASTM E1174-13 Standard Test Method for Evaluating the Effectiveness of Healthcare Professional Handwash Formulations

In the ASTM E1174-13 standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), a test method for determining the effectiveness of antimicrobial hand washing agents for reducing temporary microbial flora when used by healthcare professionals in a hand washing procedure is presented.akta. This test method must be performed by specialists trained in microbiology in facilities designed and equipped to work with potential infectious agents at the biosafety level. This test method is used to evaluate topical antimicrobial handwash formulations.

The test formulations described in this standard are designed for frequent use in order to reduce the temporary bacterial flora on the hands. For alcohol-based hand rubs and other formulations used without the aid of water, the test method described in the ASTM E2755 standard must be followed.

Hand wash formulations come in very different compositions. Another standard that will help compare the effectiveness of any product is the commonly used EN 1500 standard. The test method presented in the European standard EN 1500, like the ASTM E1174 standard, uses the experimental contamination in the hands and counts the decrease in the number of colonies. However, since the performance criteria and test parameters of these two standards are not exactly the same, a product that passes one standard can be fitted to the other standard.

There are other ASTM standards closely related to the ASTM E1174 standard. For example, ASTM E2613 standard to determine fungicidal activity, ASTM E2276 standard to determine bactericidal activity, and ASTM E1838 and ASTM E2011 standards for viricidal action.

In short, the two most widely used standards to test the effectiveness of handrubs are ASTM E1174 and EN 1500 standards. However, these two test methods are not equivalent.

The American Test and Materials Association (ASTM) provides free access to important standards used in the production and testing of personal protective equipment, including hand disinfectants, to support manufacturers, test laboratories and healthcare professionals.

With the experience gained over many years, our organization also provides standard testing services for the evaluation of the effectiveness of ASTM E1174-13 healthcare personnel hand washing formulations within the framework of laboratory services of the materials with a trained and expert staff.
