EN ISO 20347 Personal Protective Equipment - Work Footwear

The EN ISO 20347 standard, published by the International Standards Institute (ISO), describes the basic and optional requirements and test methods for occupational shoes that are not exposed to any mechanical risk such as impact or compression. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: EN ISO 20347 Personal protective equipment - Work footwear.

Special risks are covered by complementary business standards. For example, shoes for firefighters, electrically insulating shoes, safety shoes against chainsaw injuries, protective shoes against chemicals and molten metal splashes, and safety shoes for motorcycle riders.

The basic requirements for professional footwear in the EN ISO 20347 standard are listed as follows: general, design, all footwear, shoe top, patch and quarter lining, tongue, insole and outsole.

The EN ISO 20347 standard is generally the same as the safety shoes of the EN ISO 20345 standard. Therefore, occupational shoes must have the same basic requirements for safety shoes described in the ISO 20345 standard.

It is believed that the EN ISO 20347 standard, which is a basic European standard, defines all types of safety shoes. However, the truth is that this standard only describes professional footwear.

Occupational shoes need not be steel or composite toes. However, they are expected to have the following properties: antistatic, fully enclosed and energy-absorbing heels, water absorption and penetration resistance, locked soles, and outsole resistance to fuels.

Shoes covered by this standard are not designed to protect feet from heavy compression or impact force. This issue falls under the scope of other standards.

According to the basic requirements for work shoes, other materials except leather shoes and rubber and polymeric types must be water resistant to meet safety standards.
