EN ISO 20346 Personal Protective Equipment - Protective Footwear

In the EN ISO 20346 standard published by the International Standards Institute (ISO), the basic and optional requirements for safety shoes used for general purposes are explained and test methods are presented. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: EN ISO 20346 Personal protective equipment - Protective footwear.

EN ISO 20346 Personal Protective Equipment - Protective Footwear

This standard includes, for example, mechanical risks, slip resistance, thermal risks and ergonomic behavior patterns. Special risks are covered by complementary business standards. For example, shoes for firefighters, electrically insulating shoes, safety shoes against chainsaw injuries, protective shoes against chemicals and molten metal splashes, and safety shoes for motorcycle riders.

The basic requirements for safety shoes in the EN ISO 20346 standard are listed as follows: general, design, all footwear, shoe top, patch and quarter lining, tongue, insole and outsole.

Although the EN ISO 20346 standard is essentially exactly the same as the safety shoes of the EN ISO 20345 standard, these work shoes only have a protective toe cap with an impact resistance of 100 joules and a pressure force of 1000 Newton. In addition, these work shoes must have the same basic requirements for safety shoes described in the ISO 20345 standard.

EN ISO 20346, which is a basic European standard, has been proposed to be withdrawn recently. However, some European Union countries are willing to maintain the standard. 200 joule toe shoes are more popular and unlike these products, very few shoe styles are evaluated according to the EN ISO 20346 standard.

Businesses need to make a risk assessment before choosing safety shoes for their employees. The results of this evaluation show the dangers that employees should be protected against and allow the selection of safety shoes that best comply with the EN ISO 20346 standard.
