EN 15090 Footwear for Firefighters

In the EN ISO 15090 standard, which is a European standard, the requirements for the performance of three types of shoes to be used by firefighters in emergency situations related to fire fighting, general purpose rescue, fire rescue and hazardous materials are explained and test methods are presented. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: EN 15090 Footwear for firefighters.

This standard does not cover special personal protective equipment used in high risk situations. For example, the conditions described in the ISO 15538 standard (ISO 15538 Protective clothing for firefighters - Laboratory test methods and performance requirements for protective clothing with reflective outer surfaces).

Before choosing safety shoes for firefighters, there is a need for a recent risk assessment study for the working environment. This study gives a clear idea about the dangers to be protected and allows the selection of the most suitable personal protective equipment for the working environment.

Main types of shoes for firefighters are:

• Type 1: General purpose rescue, firefighting, firefighting action involving fire in vegetative areas such as forest, fields, grass or farmland is suitable.
• Type 2: Suitable for fire rescue, fire extinguishing and property protection in buildings, closed structures, vehicles, ships or similar properties in case of fire or emergency.
• Type 3: Suitable for emergencies involving loss of life, injury to personnel or damage to property and the environment, and the release of hazardous chemicals into the environment. It is also suitable for fire rescue, firefighting and property protection in aircraft, buildings, enclosed structures, vehicles, ships or similar property related to fire or emergency.
